After nearly a decade of decreases in new HIV pediatric infections, progress has stalled. The percentage of pregnant women receiving antiretroviral therapy has been almost stagnant since 2014, and coverage has actually fallen slightly in western and central Africa. In 2017, approximately half of new infections in infants occurred during the breastfeeding period. The emergence of COVID-19 has exacerbated these pre-existing challenges and illuminated the fragility of our progress to date. Countries across the African continent have reported significant decreases in antenatal care visits and early infant diagnosis, with some nations reporting ANC declines by almost 50% and early infant diagnosis declines by 60%. This session will highlight where and why we have stalled in the elimination of vertical transmission and paediatric HIV infection. It will update us on what current and future prevention modalities are at our disposal to finally close the chapter on paediatric HIV.
