Engaging Lake Victoria fishing communities in HIV prevention research: Lessons from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania
•
Satellite Channel 3
Studies have consistently reported high HIV prevalence and incidence rates among Lake Victoria fishing communities in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Some of the predisposing factors to HIV in these communities include; high risk sexual behaviors; high mobility; and inadequate access to good quality healthcare and other social services. The Lake Victoria Consortium for Health Research (LVCHR) was established in 2013 by research organizations working around Lake Victoria. It is aimed at improving the health of the fishing communities that inhabit the Lake Victoria shoreline and islands in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Funded by USAID, through IAVI, the consortium has since been able to conduct a range of studies in fishing communities around Lake Victoria. LVCHR is hosting this satellite, to share important research findings, lessons, as well as challenges and opportunities of engaging this population in future large-scale HIV prevention trials. Target audience: Researchers, Policy Makers, Funders, and Service Providers.
