SA17 12:15 PM > 1:45 PM Bringing PrEP to the people: Democratizing access to PrEP through differentiated delivery before, during, and after COVID-19 Satellite Channel 1

While the introduction of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to the HIV prevention toolbox has resulted in steeper reductions in HIV infections among certain population segments in North America, Europe, and Australia, the majority of people who could benefit from PrEP, including adolescent girls and young women and key populations, still have sub-optimal access to PrEP services. Though there has been a steady increase in new PrEP enrollment since 2018, as of late 2020, there were only 928,000 PrEP initiations to date, far short of the global UNAIDS target of 3 million active PrEP users by the end of 2020.
However, there has been a recent surge, started prior to and now amplified by COVID-19, to expand and maintain access to PrEP services by decentralizing delivery out of clinical settings, shifting towards community/home-based, peer-led, private sector, and/or telehealth models. With long-acting PrEP and other formulations underway, a greater range of options may contribute to improved PrEP uptake and persistence.
In this session, we will take stock of advances to differentiate PrEP delivery, with discussions and presentations highlighting promising HIV prevention technologies in the pipeline, lessons we can apply from differentiated ART and family planning to PrEP, and case examples of differentiated PrEP in practice from Africa and Asia. Perspectives from PrEP users, ministries of health, and global normative agencies will also be shared through a series of video perspectives and moderated panel discussion on how differentiated PrEP can be adopted in policy frameworks and what else is needed to further accelerate differentiated PrEP delivery.
